Curriculum Information

All children in the Language Unit follow the same curriculum as their mainstream peers. They are taught the full National Curriculum which is differentiated to meet their needs. The Literacy and Numeracy lessons are taught to small groups of children from the Unit and may include mainstream SEN children who benefit from the specialist teaching available. . The Language Unit Manager uses the planning written by the year band teams to form the basis of the Literacy and Numeracy lessons taught in the Unit.

Children are mainly based in their mainstream classes for the other subject areas. When in class they are supported by their SNA if   required.

Individual targets are set for literacy and numeracy and these are reviewed each term. Children's achievements and attainments are recorded on individual pupil tracking grids using P-levels and National Curriculum levels

The Language Unit also provides a range of additional activities to support and meet the specific targets recorded on the children's statements. These include :- a daily gross and fine motor skills programme, a YR play skills group, drama and role play and social communication groups. As with the literacy and numeracy lessons these groups will often have children from the mainstream schools who have been identified as benefiting from the additional input.
