Vigo Language Unit - a brief history.

The Language Unit at Vigo was first established as a Key Stage 1 Unit only and sited in the Infant School in September 1994.

Mrs Neale was appointed as Language Unit Manager in January 1995 and the first three children entered the Unit in September 1996. Two sessions of speech and language therapy were provided. From very small beginnings the Language Unit has continued to develop and extend the specialist support it offers.

Nine children are currently supported with 5 sessions of speech and language therapy. This is due to increase further in September 2000. So far the Language Unit has supported sixteen children, returning eight to their local mainstream schools no longer needing intensive speech and language therapy.

OFSTED reports in January 1996 and October 1999 have praised the "good quality of education "  and "very good teaching"  provided by the Unit.

September 2000 will see the opening of the Key Stage 2 provision based in Vigo Juniors. There will be a new classroom resource base built during the next year for the junior aged children.
